Transit

Transit: - buses and trains vs flying
               - buses vs cabs
               - packing light, only taking essentials vs bringing everything you need
Finding cheap ways to travel both around the city I'm at and going city to city or country to country is key in this journey, also not having too much to carry around with me would be nice, I know there's all sort of ways out there to consolidate and condense what you need to bring and how. All tips and suggestions are welcome.

This is the page to add comments on any tips or advice to help me find cheap ways to travel, both within the cities and abroad between countries, any and all help is greatly appreciated. You can always e-mail me if you would rather not make a public post at bobfnbarker81@gmail.com

*EDIT*

After this year of traveling I've had a lot of experience in looking for cheap flights, learning to get around a new town with using data on your phone, and doing it all cheaply. One word. Google. Google Maps works offline, you can't look up addresses or map out routes but if you do all that in you hotel or at a hot spot you can then follow it on the map offline, acting like a GPS or compass to get you to your destination. It can also show you the schedule of the local transit like trains and buses, and sometimes the fare as well, when planning out routes, so that's a pretty helpful tool, why bother paying the extra money for a express bus (some local transits can be expensive, other really cheap and totally worth it) if you can just walk there in 20 mins. for free?
Also, while having a Google account and saving addresses and mapping out routes you can use later you can take screen shots to send your phone to use at references while traveling. I've found this very helpful in all my travels and now I have it down pretty good, nothing beats factoring in extra time to explore your surroundings and get to know the area you're staying in but this all helps pretty good.

As for packing, there's all sorts of advise out there on different backpacking blogs or Reddit. I found 4 days worth of clothes is the maximum you'll need to bring, some even bring less. It all comes down to what you'll be doing and where you'll be going and how much you can comfortably carry, and, mostly importantly, getting a good reliable and comfortable backpack. Having the proper backpack that is set perfectly to you makes all the difference, take the time to get it all sorted it out before traveling. I myself planned out everything I would need, packed it all up, rolling clothes in bundles helps save so much room, and tried it all out before any or my travels. I now have a pretty solid plan on what to take and how to pack. I'll take pics and post packing my bag next travel, in case that helps anyone out in sorting their own bag. I'll actually make a whole post about this before the Odyssey starts and outline everything I plan on bringing and why. Other than that this area is all researched out on my end. Now I just have to plan the trip!

  1. *UPDATE*
I've looked around and realized one important thing, outside of Canada I don't know anything about different airlines. If anyone has any information about best airline for cheap flights for Europe, Asia, pretty much anywhere outside of North America, that would be very helpful.
Also, travel gear. Any helpful tips on simplifying essentials, like what to bring, what not to worry about, and the best ways to pack them or types to pick up (like light weight travel sleeping bag, towel etc.) would be greatly appreciated.

  2. here is a Reddit page on flying, it has all the basic need to know information for flying when traveling. I've flown quite a bit so nothing really jumped out at me at new, but the one great thing this page has is the travel advisory links for US, Canadian and UK citizens, which is very helpful. Being a Canadian citizen I'll be re-posting the link to that page.
